Buy a Brick

When Zion Lutheran Church and School completed building our wonderful new Zion Fellowship Center we created a brick walkway of celebration. Many of our families participated.  Zion is so thankful to God and for the support of the family of faith. The opportunity is available again for those that are new to the church or school to celebrate with us.  You may purchase a brick for $100 or more (depending on what you want inscribed.)  Celebrate a graduation, a baptismal birthday, confirmation, or in memory of a loved family member.  Stop by the school office or the church office, Monday-Friday 8 am to 4 pm to fill out a form and participate with a lasting memory!

Sponsor a Rosebush
Zion’s rose garden at the west side of the church sanctuary is established. Would you like to sponsor a rose to honor a friend or loved one?  How about in memory of a loved one?  Stop by the church office and see Gay Rose.  The cost for sponsorship is $50.

Some of the titles include; “Praying When Depressed,” “When Death is Unexpected,” “Loving Someone with a Drinking or Drug Problem,” “Helping Kids to Cope with Death,” “Peer Pressure,” and many more. As you can tell, there is a booklet for all ages and situations. Care-Notes are available in the Zion Fellowship Center. Please take as many as you want - they’re free! May these Care-Notes give you comforting words to speak to friends and family.

Help Rebuild New Orleans

August 3-9

It is hard to believe that Hurricane Katrina occurred almost 4 years ago.  Yet the devastation is still very evident.  There are still many homes that need to be rebuilt, repaired and even cleaned out.  This summer, Zion has the opportunity to help the people of New Orleans overcome this heart break. During the Week of August 3-9 a group of willing servants from Zion will be traveling to New Orleans to spend a week at Camp Restore.  Camp Restore is a Lutheran organization that provides housing and meals for volunteers.  They will also organize work sites for us, so we will be able to best use our skills to help those in need.  What an incredible opportunity we have to serve.  This project will cost us just $25 a day per person.  This will include 3 meals a day, a place to sleep, showers, and a worship service each night.  Our main expense will be transportation.  We currently have 30 spots available.  All participants must be 16 years old or older.  If you are interested, please contact Lisa Dufresne, as soon as possible.  More information will be available soon.

Dedication of Mural

Sunday, January 13  Zion dedicated our new mural to the teachers of Zion.  This very special gift will keep giving for years. It is a visible reminder of the gift of faith parents have given their children by bringing them up in the faith and educating them in our Sunday School and Christian day school. A family of our congregation commissioned artist David von Behren to design and construct a wood mural for the church and school. It is located in the foyer of the Zion Fellowship Center.  Dave is a friend of Dan and Sandie Fischer’s. His work can be seen at the St. Louis Seminary, the CNH District office, our PSW District office, St. Paul’s, Pacific Beach, and various churches in the country. Each piece is unique. This piece of art as explained below is meant to be admired and studied as another reminder of how great our God is. Enjoy Dave’s creativity, God’s handiwork and the promises (gifts) He gives to us!

A CHRISTIAN LIFE-Notes from the artist…
A mural in hardwood by David von Behren
“Since the mural resides in the foyer of the Fellowship and Education Building, I selected a theme taken from Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” This verse is not only a reminder to parents of the importance of a Christian upbringing and Christian community for their children, but offers a visual reminder to students of the Christian elements of their life as depicted by the symbols.  The background of the mural depicts a shelf of books symbolizing development of the mind through reading and study.  Also, in the mural are symbols of a Christian life, depicting the continuation of a Christian family from generation to generation.

- Baptism: Water and the Word symbolized by the open Bible and the Three Drops of Water representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- Communion: Symbolized by the Host and Chalice.
- Prayer: Symbolized by the Bible and praying hands.
- Christian Marriage: symbolized by the Cross and Interlocking Wedding Rings.

Fire Victim Fund

Thank you to all our church and school families who gave generously to the fire victim fund. We especially thank Thrivent for providing a delicious tri-tip barbecue dinner on Thursday, November 8. We had over 300 of both church and school families in attendance, and to date have raised over $9000 for fire victims.  We are assisting nine church and school families who have suffered loss and will be looking to provide more help.  There may be other families that have needs that we are unaware of. If you know of someone who has suffered loss from the fire, please contact Pastor Demel, Gay Rose, Nancy Swanlund or Elisa Dufresne. All information will be kept confidential; we only desire to help those who are in need in a way that will benefit them and give glory to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Response to the Fire:

We are delighted to announce that Thrivent will do a 1:3 match on our Fundraising efforts. For every $3 donated, Thrivent will contribute $1.

April Update on the Fire Victims Fund

The remaining funds raised in November have been given to our church and school families that lost homes in the Rice fire.  Thank you again to Zion’s family of faith for caring and giving so generously! We pray that the families are blessed by these gifts of love.

Zion crafters are praying and making shawls!
Crafters from both the church and school are jumping at the opportunity to make a prayer shawl! We have run out of materials. Zion women are making shawls for people on our prayer list going through difficult times. They pray for the individual receiving the shawl each time they work on it. The pattern is worked in groups of 3 symbolizing the Holy Trinity. It can be either crocheted or knit. Zion is in need of monetary donations for this project to continue. Please see me, Gay Rose at the church office or Dana Taylor, avocadolady@hotmail.com to get a shawl packet to work on or contribute to this caring ministry.

· Do save entire postcards
· Do save the flag stamps

Stamps in albums, older postcards and envelopes (from 1930 or earlier) and first day covers should be sent as they are. It is very helpful if you can trim and sort the stamps. Cut the stamps from the envelopes with a margin of no less than 1/4 inch around the stamp. Bring your stamps to the church office.

Sound Technicians Needed

We need volunteers to assist with the worship services on Sunday morning by providing assistance in the sound booth. If interested, please call Allen Sargent at 728-8288 or email asargent@zlcs.org.

We Encourage You to Use “Simply Giving”

Simply Giving is a simple, convenient way for members to make their church offerings using safe electronic fund transfers at no cost to you or to Zion. It allows you to deposit your offerings directly into Zion’s operating account on a steady, uninterrupted basis. You choose the donation frequency (once a week, every other week or monthly), the donation amount, and the fund you choose to give to:  General Fund and/or Connect Campaign Fund. In this way you enjoy the benefits of first-fruits giving, consistent participation in your stewardship pledges even during travel, strengthened support of your church, and increased security over cash and checks (i.e., cannot be lost, stolen or forgotten).  And Zion benefits from the predictable cash flow for better financial planning, reduced work for church and finance staff, secure cash management.  Enrollment forms are available from the church office (or at the link below); then return the completed form to the church office.

Charitable Giving  In August 2006, President Bush signed a law that allows taxpayers who are 70½ or older to give away as much as $100,000 a year from their IRA directly to qualified charities without triggering federal income taxes.  In a typical case, a taxpayer can get an exclusion from gross income for otherwise taxable distributions of as much as $100,000 from an IRA -- as long as the money is paid directly to a qualified charity. This money counts toward taxpayers' required minimum distributions for that year. This new break is available only for distributions this year and in 2007.  For more information see Don Hall or Denny Lindeman.
