November already?

Report cards are in your child’s progress folder today, so please look for them. Please disregard the parent signature line on the back of the report card and keep your copy at home. I would like you to sign the outside of the envelope though and send it back to school Monday with your child. If you have not signed up for a parent-teacher conference please stop by the office and sign up early next week. I am looking forward to telling you about how great your child is doing in second grade!

In reading this week we read Butterfly House, which we learned was realistic fiction. We learned about words that have multiple meanings, studied the /j/ sound spelling card and learned that the letter g says /j/ sometimes, read in our decodables which help us with fluency, learned how to use commas when we write a list of words (there is a homework assignment in your child’s homework folder to help review this concept), and we discussed time and order words. It is amazing what we accomplish every morning in reading! Since next week is a short week, we will not have a spelling test, vocabulary test, or reading comprehension test. We will be focusing on writing and reviewing skills next week as we take a breather.

In math this week we worked heavily on counting money, and I am asking that you please continue to count coins at home with your child. We are well beyond the coin recognition stage, however, some students still need the review. We are also continuing to work on our place value unit which includes fact families and number concepts.

The Book-It program is going well! Congratulations to Luc Peloquin who completed his Book-It for October (I believe that is every child!...If I missed a name, please let me know). The book report for November is in your child’s folder today. Please help your child to choose a slightly challenging book to read. The written report will be due on Friday, December 2.

• Monday, November 14 from 4-8 is our school fundraising evening at Fresh and Easy. This has been a great fundraising evening for us in the past, and all you need to do to help is stop by and shop! Our school earns a percentage of sales for that time period, along with the receipts money. Hope to see you all there!

• Parent-teacher conferences are next Thursday. I am looking forward to speaking with all of you!

• Please remember school is not in session next Thursday and Friday.

WEEKLY News from Miss Ellis
Week of October 14, 2011

Wow! What crazy weather we have had the last couple of weeks! We have had everything from cold and misty to very hot! That makes it hard to know how many layers of clothing to send! On the cooler days, be sure to send a sweater or sweatshirt with your child’s name written somewhere easy to find!

In our Jesus Time this week we learned how Joshua became the new leader of the people of Israel, and how he trusted God. We discussed the fact that we are all leaders at different times and we are responsible to make good decisions and to trust in God, like Joshua did!

The end of our first quarter of school is just two weeks away. It’s hard to believe we have almost completed a quarter of school already! Our schedule is a bit different this week, to help us re-view for our unit tests coming up next week. There will be no science quiz this week. Our social studies quiz will be Wednesday, so I will send the social studies book home on Tuesday night so you can study. Watch for study guides and books to go home next weekend, to help you review the science and social studies concepts that will be tested on the unit tests.

God’s Blessings,
Miss Ellis
