FIFTH GRADE NEWS May 9, 2008
The students did a great job leading chapel this week. Their words were evidence of their great love for our God. I praise God for the willingness these boys and girls have to share their faith publicly.
FIELD TRIP TO MARS this week on Tuesday, May 13 Students are to bring a sack lunch and a snack for the trip home. Mrs. Shannon Johnson, Mr. or Mrs. Patrick Johnson, Mr. Williams, Mrs. Curtin, and Mrs. Denke will be driving us.
FIFTH GRADE FOLK FESTIVAL The second annual Fifth Grade Folk Festival will be held on Wednesday evening, May 28th at 6:00 P.M. After the performance, we will serve dessert and punch. We are asking each family to bring a dessert or two dozen cookies to share. Please see the attached pink handout from our wonderful fifth-grade room moms, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Mason, for further information about the event.
COSTUME INFORMATION: The teachers have prepared a list of needed items for student costumes to avoid the purchase or rental of any costume items if at all possible. We are hoping that you could lend us these items for our rehearsals and performance. Please see below for the list of items needed. We need them as soon as possible. Please label them clearly so that we may return them to you!
GRANDPARENTS’ DAY I really enjoyed having grandparents and special friends in the classroom. It was a wonderful day. Everyone seemed to enjoy chapel, our get-acquainted activity, and the geography game. It was wonderful to watch the interaction between the students and the “grand” people they brought with them.

NEW UPCOMING FIFTH GRADE EVENTS
Annual Fifth Grade Folk Festival All fifth grade students will be beginning music rehearsals for our annual folk festival this week.
The Festival is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
The Fifth Grade Folk Festival is a one-evening performance by all fifth graders in celebration of American westward movement. The performance is a combination of song and speaking parts. Each student is given a part either as a Native American, Puritan/Shaker, hillbilly, mountain man, early soldier, southern belle, aristocrat, railroad man, cowboy, miner, nurse, southerner, settler, logger, or native Hawaiian. Students are in costume and memorize one or two lines to speak aloud as their particular type of American. Folksongs such as “This Land is Your Land,” “Crawdad Song,” “Yankee Doodle,” “Erie Canal,” “Wabash Cannonball,” “Ballad of Davy Crockett,” “Old Dan Tucker,” etc. accompany the script.
Students will be taught many traditional American folksongs, as well as how to act their unique part and project their voices. The performance area will be decorated in early American style.
We will need costume items and quilts to hang the evening of the performance.
Much more information to follow next week! PLEASE NOTE: Due to this event, the fifth graders will NOT be participating in Zion’s Spring Musical scheduled for May 21-22.
Annual 5th Grade Camp at Palomar Mountain We thank God for our wonderful camp experience. We are official Kingdom Agents! The students grew in many ways as we studied God’s beautiful creation and the work of His hand. We especially thank God for our terrific chaperones: Mr. Denke, Mr. Lundqvist, and Mr. Richelieu. Thank you, gentlemen, for an unforgettable trip and for your selfless sacrifice of work time in order to be with us.
